Initially, some workers said, they thought the cancer institute might be spared. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called chronic disease cancer is one gan existential threath to the country. Cancer research, with multiple NCI-funded breakthroughs in genetics and immunotherapy, has sidestepped the political minefields around other public health issues, like vaccination.

That comment angered many staffers, several said in interviews. Many got up and walked out during the speech, while others, watching remotely, scoffed or jeered.

Several current and former NCI scientists questioned Bhattacharyafs commitment to young scientists and minorities. Staffing cuts early in the year eliminated many recently hired NCI scientists. At least 172 National Cancer Institute grants, including for research aimed at minimizing health disparities among racial minorities or LGBTQ+ people, were terminated and hadnft been reinstated as of June 16, according to a KFF Health News analysis of HHS documents and a list of grant terminations by outside researchers.

Those populations have higher rates of certain cancer diagnoses and are more likely to be diagnosed later than white or heterosexual people. Black people are also more likely to die of many cancer types than all other racial and ethnic groups.

During a May 19 town hall meeting with NIH staff members, Jay Bhattacharya, the institutefs new director, equivocated when asked about funding cuts for research into improving the health of racial and ethnic minorities cuts made under the guise of purging DEI from the government.

According to a recording of the meeting obtained by KFF Health News, Bhattacharya said the agency remained gabsolutely committed to advancing the health and well-being of every population, including minority populations, LGBTQ populations, and every population.h

Research addressing the health needs of women and minorities is gan absolute priority of mine,h he said. gWefre going to keep funding that.h But a study considering whether gstructural racism causes poor health in minority populationsh is gnot a scientific hypothesis.h

Elon Musk stood next to President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, but the physical proximity belied a growing philosophical divide between two of the world's most powerful men, resulting in the tech mogul's abrupt announcement that he is departing Washington without having achieved his goal of decimating the federal government.
„Q„R„Q‹35
Trump took a more charitable view of Musk's tenure during a sprawling news conference in which he also declined to rule out pardoning Sean "Diddy" Combs, who is on trial on charges of sex trafficking and other alleged crimes; said he dislikes "the concept" of former first lady Jill Biden being forced to testify before Congress about her husband's mental fitness; and predicted again that Iran is on the cusp of making a deal that would suspend its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
kra35.cc
In a battle of plutocrats against populists, Bannon, a longtime advocate for reducing the size and scope of government, found Musk's methods and policy preferences to be sharply at odds with those of the MAGA movement. So, ultimately, did Musk, who broke with Trump repeatedly on agenda items as narrow as limiting visas for foreign workers and as broad as Trump's signature "big beautiful" budget bill which Musk belittled for threatening to add trillions of dollars to the national debt.

gI was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," Musk said in an interview with CBS' "Sunday Morning," which will air this weekend.
kra35 „R„R
"I love the gold on the ceiling," he said.

Musk has argued that inertia throttled his efforts to reduce government spending a conclusion that raises questions about whether he was naive about the challenge of the mission he undertook.

gThe federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realized,h he told The Washington Post this week. gI thought there were problems, but it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in D.C., to say the least.h

On Friday, he drew an implicit parallel between American government and the Nazi regime that committed a genocide, invoking the "banality of evil" that Hannah Arendt used to describe the atrocities in Germany.

Cecile Simmons, a trained yoga teacher, was surprised when many of the wellness accounts she followed started posting about climate change. gIt just started popping up in my feed and I thought OK, thatfs interesting, now that COVID is eoverf theyfre diversifying the narrative,h she told CNN.

Simmons, also a researcher at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a UK-based think tank focused on disinformation, started digging. She pored over more than 150 wellness accounts, most of which had between 10,000 to 100,000 followers. All offered wellness advice, sold related products and promoted some form of misinformation.

The claims Simmons found were sweeping and varied, ranging from outright climate denial to attempts to undermine climate solutions by portraying them as part of a global plot for control.

Some focused on deadly extreme weather events, saying they were orchestrated by the government, or that malign global forces were modifying the weather. Others claimed climate policies were a plot to control peoplefs lives, bodies and diets. A small section of new age accounts asserted that climate change was the result of a disconnection with forces in the universe.

Rejecting climate action may seem counterintuitive for wellness influencers, who often focus on nature or evoke bucolic visions of the past. But when you have insight into this world, it tracks, Simmons said.

A strong thread of individualism runs through wellness accounts, alongside a deep distrust of authorities. gThey emphasize individual solutions to collective problems, and they sell wellness as a response to climate anxiety,h she said.

Many of these influencers maintain they are merely speaking truth to power. Itfs a theme of @truth_crunchy_mama account, who calls herself a gtruth teller.h The person who runs the account did not respond to CNNfs request for comment.

Some even say they accept the human-caused climate crisis.

Joseph Mercola, the man behind the @drmercola Instagram account, told CNN that ghumans are absolutely impacting the environment and the climate.h When asked about his comments on Hawaiifs wildfires, he said he accepts the consensus that dry conditions and strong winds fueled the blaze. gIt was never stated that it was definitely intentional,h he said, galthough some have speculated that is a possibility.h

His climate posts are often framed in this way, not making definitive claims but rather asking questions like: Is the idea of eating insects gpart of globalistsf egreen agenda?fh Or advertising guest posts suggesting the gwar on climate changeh follows gthe same playbook used by nefarious individuals who lust for complete power over the citizens.h
