A Massachusetts college student who was deported while trying to visit family for Thanksgiving said an immigration officer told her it wouldnft matter if she spoke to a lawyer, she was going to be removed from the country anyway.

Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, a 19-year-old freshman at Babson College, was flown to Honduras on Nov. 22, two days after she was detained at Bostonfs airport and one day after a judge ordered that she remain in the country.
trip scan
In a court document filed Saturday, she described two sleepless nights first, staying awake with excitement in anticipation of seeing her family, and then later, being crammed with 17 other women in a cell gwhich was so small that we did not even have enough space to sleep on the floor.h
trip scan
Lopez Belloza, who is now staying with her grandparents, came to the US in 2014 at age 8 and was ordered deported several years later. Though the government has argued that she missed multiple opportunities to appeal, Lopez Belloza said her previous attorney told her there was no removal order.

gIf I had been aware of my 2017 deportation order, I would not have traveled with my valid passport,h she wrote. gI would have dedicated significant time and effort during the past eight years to hiring an attorney who could help me resolve my immigration situation.h

The government also argues that the judge who issued the Nov. 21 order preventing her removal lacked jurisdiction because by then, Lopez Belloza was already in Texas on her way out of the country. But lawyers for the student argue that Immigration and Customs Enforcement made it all but impossible to locate her.

According to Lopez Belloza, when she refused to sign a form consenting to deportation and asked to call her parents or a lawyer, a gtall, muscular, intimidatingh ICE officer gsaid it didnft matter if I spoke to a lawyer because I was going to be deported anyway.h She later was allowed to call her family from Massachusetts, but that was before she knew she would be flown to Texas and then Honduras.

In a separate filing, lawyers for Lopez Belloza said the government acted gin bad faith and with furtivenessh by failing to answer phone calls to the Boston-area ICE office or update its detainee locator database and by moving her without allowing her to notify her parents or counsel. They asked a judge to schedule a hearing and allow Lopez Belloza to return to the US to testify.

CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss decided to shelve a planned g60 Minutesh story titled gInside CECOT,h creating an uproar inside CBS, but the report has reached a worldwide audience anyway.
mine „Š„p„‡„„„p
On Monday, some Canadian viewers noticed that the pre-planned g60 Minutesh episode was published on a streaming platform owned by Global TV, the network that has the rights to g60 Minutesh in Canada.
mine.exchange
The preplanned episode led with correspondent Sharyn Alfonsifs story the one that Weiss stopped from airing in the US because she said it was gnot ready.h
mine.exchange
Several Canadian viewers shared clips and summaries of the story on social media, and within hours, the videos went viral on platforms like Reddit and Bluesky.

gWatch fast,h one of the Canadian viewers wrote on Bluesky, predicting that CBS would try to have the videos taken offline.

Progressive Substack writers and commentators blasted out the clips and urged people to share them. gThis could wind up being the most-watched newsmagazine segment in television history,h the high-profile Trump antagonist George Conway commented on X.

A CBS News spokesperson had no immediate comment on the astonishing turn of events.

Alfonsifs report was weeks in the making. Weiss screened it for the first time last Thursday night. The story was finalized on Friday, according to CBS sources, and was announced in a press release that same day.

On Saturday morning, Weiss began to change her mind about the story and raised concerns about its content, including the lack of responses from the relevant Trump administration officials.

But networks like CBS sometimes deliver taped programming to affiliates like Global TV ahead of time. That appears to be what happened in this case: The Friday version of the g60 Minutesh episode is what streamed to Canadian viewers.

The inadvertent Canadian stream is gthe best thing that could have happened,h a CBS source told CNN on Monday evening, arguing that the Alfonsi piece is gexcellenth and should have been televised as intended.

People close to Weiss have argued that the piece was imbalanced, however, because it did not include interviews with Trump officials.

Weiss told staffers on Monday, gWe need to be able to get the principals on the record and on camera.h However, in an earlier memo to colleagues, Alfonsi asserted that her team tried, and their grefusal to be interviewedh was ga tactical maneuver designed to kill the story.h

At the end of the segment that streamed on Global TVfs platform, Alfonsi said Homeland Security gdeclined our request for an interview and referred all questions about CECOT to El Salvador. The government there did not respond to our request.h

The segment included sound bites from President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. But it was clearly meant to be a story about Venezuelan men deported to El Salvador, not about the officials who implemented Trumpfs mass deportation policy.

But during his long tenure Buffett has had plenty of sensible things to say about how to invest well and live a good life through the work you choose and the way you treat people.

Herefs just a sampling:

Donft lose money
gThe first rule in investment is donft lose. And the second rule in investment is donft forget the first rule.h

Buffett is best known as a value investor someone who buys companies he believes are undervalued. gIf you buy things for far below what theyfre worth and you buy a group of them, you basically donft lose money,h he explained on Adam Smithfs Money World.

But Buffettfs advice also speaks to the need to diversify risk.

gItfs the foundation of how I manage client money,h said certified financial planner and CPA Brian Kearns. gInvesting is about growth, but it is also about capital preservation. c Find reasonably priced investments c but donft risk too much of your net worth on one idea.h

It also means investing across asset classes. gThey all have different risk profiles and, when combined, allow you to hold investments for the long term because you will experience less volatility,h Kearns said.

Elusive shipwreck found in Lake Michigan over 100 years after sinking
rutor-24 at
A gghost shiph that sank in Lake Michigan nearly 140 years ago and eluded several search efforts over the past five decades has been found, according to researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association.

The wooden schooner got caught in a storm in the dead of night and went down in September 1886. In the weeks after, a lighthouse keeper reported the shipfs masts breaking the lake surface, and fishermen caught pieces of the vessel in their nets. Still, wreck hunters were unable to track down the shipfs location until now.

Earlier this year, a team of researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association and Wisconsin Historical Society located the shipwreck off the coastal town of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, the association announced on Sunday.

Named the F.J. King, the ship had become a legend within the Wisconsin wreck hunter community for its elusive nature, said maritime historian Brendon Baillod, principal investigator and project lead of the discovery.

gWe really wanted to solve this mystery, and we didnft expect to,h Baillod told CNN. g(The ship) seemed to have just vanished into thin air. c I actually couldnft believe we found it.h

The wreck is just one of many that have been found in the Great Lakes in recent years, and there are still hundreds left to be recovered in Lake Michigan alone, according to Baillod.

The eghost shipf
Built in 1867, the F.J. King plied the waters of the Great Lakes for the purpose of trans-lake commerce. The ship transported grains during a time when Wisconsin served as the breadbasket of the United States. The 144-foot-long (44-meter) vessel also carried cargo including iron ore, lumber and more.

The ship had a lucrative 19-year career until that September night when a gale-force wind caused its seams to break apart, according to the announcement. The captain, William Griffin, ordered the crew to evacuate on the shipfs yawl boat, from where they watched the F.J. King sink, bow first.

22, two days after she was detained at Bostonfs airport and one day after a judge ordered that she remain in the country.
tripscan
In a court document filed Saturday, she described two sleepless nights first, staying awake with excitement in anticipation of seeing her family, and then later, being crammed with 17 other women in a cell gwhich was so small that we did not even have enough space to sleep on the floor.h
„„„‚„y„ „ƒ„{„p„~

CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss decided to shelve a planned g60 Minutesh story titled gInside CECOT,h creating an uproar inside CBS, but the report has reached a worldwide audience anyway.
mine.exchange

Inside the Bari Weiss decision that led to a e60 Minutesf crisis

You donft get labeled the gOracle of Omahah for nothing.

As one of the worldfs most successful investors, Warren Buffettfs views on markets, companies and the economy have always been of great interest on Wall Street and Main Street.
trip scan
Now 95, Buffett is stepping down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, 60 years after taking a controlling share in the company.
tripscan

„‚„…„„„€„‚ „x„u„‚„{„p„|„€

You donft get labeled the gOracle of Omahah for nothing.
tripscan top
As one of the worldfs most successful investors, Warren Buffettfs views on markets, companies and the economy have always been of great interest on Wall Street and Main Street.
„„„‚„y„„ƒ„{„p„~ „r„‡„€„t
Now 95, Buffett is stepping down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, 60 years after taking a controlling share in the company.
„„„‚„y„„ƒ„{„p„~ „ƒ„p„z„„

You donft get labeled the gOracle of Omahah for nothing.
„„„‚„y„„ƒ„{„p„~ „r„‡„€„t
As one of the worldfs most successful investors, Warren Buffettfs views on markets, companies and the economy have always been of great interest on Wall Street and Main Street.
tripscan top
Now 95, Buffett is stepping down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, 60 years after taking a controlling share in the company.
„„„‚„y„„ƒ„{„p„~ „ƒ„p„z„„
